Is Mulching Really Necessary?

Is Mulching Really Necessary?

Mulch is not strictly necessary. However, leaving the earth bare is not ideal for your garden beds. Besides creating a nice clean look around your home, the main advantages of mulch are to help keep down the weeds and to keep the soil from drying out. Mulch keeps the soil more evenly moist which may help reduce the amount of watering that is needed. It also helps moderate the temperature of the soil, for a cool climate a darker color will absorb the heat while a lighter color can cool the soil. Mulch acidifies the soil, making fertilizers more available to the plants. It helps in making soil friendly for the advantageous soil organisms from earthworms on down to beneficial microorganisms. Mulch improves irrigation by softening the fall of the water drops on the soil surface. The water hits the mulch, then seeps into the soil preventing the water from compacting the soil when it hits. Additionally, stopping the soil from being splashed up on plants and flowers. In conclusion adding a nice layer of mulch to your flower beds may not be absolutely necessary but will help to keep them looking good, easier to maintain, and filled with happier plants.

Stems Floral & More

By Michelle Cox April 22, 2025
May is one of my favorite times to rethink the garden—especially the perennial beds. Plants are waking up, the weather is perfect for digging, and you can really reshape your space before summer hits. Dividing and moving perennials isn’t just practical—it’s deeply satisfying. It’s like rearranging furniture and realizing your room suddenly works better.

Annuals are the instant-gratification stars of the gardening world. Unlike perennials, which take time to settle in, annuals go big, fast—bursting with color and life from the moment they’re planted. If you want a vibrant, feel-good garden that looks amazing from the curb (or your coffee chair), annuals are where it’s at.
Tomato Plants | Zone 5, Rockford IL | The Landscape Connection
By Michelle Cox April 22, 2025
If you’ve ever rushed to plant tomatoes the second the snow melts, you’re not alone. It’s tempting—especially after a long Zone 5 winter—to get those baby plants in the ground early. But when it comes to tomatoes, patience pays off. Late-May is what I call the “sweet spot”—the time when conditions finally line up to give your tomatoes the best chance to thrive.
